National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States
- On Thursday, July 22, 2004, the 9/11 Commission posted its report online [www.9-11commission.gov/] (and it is available in print). I was able to download it the following evening (due to extreme server overload -- over 10 million hits? -- prior downloading proved impossible). It's a 7.2 Mb Acrobat document (.pdf).
I won't go into the substance of the report, which others have commented on, because I haven't had time to read it in full.
I noticed two things:
(1) The report is very readable (see Plan English initiatives in drafting government documents),
(2) And well designed, with a choice of typeface that differs from the standard Times Roman or Helvetica (It's set in Monotype Bembo).
Commission d'enquête sur les attentats terroristes contre les États-Unis
- La Commission d'enquête du 11/9 a publié en ligne [www.9-11commission.gov/] (et en librairie) son rapport le 25 juillet 2004. Je l'ai téléchargé (document Acrobat .pdf 7,4 Mb) le lendemain en pleine nuit, les précédentes tentatives s'avérant infructueuses due à l'encombrement des serveurs (+ de 10 millions de connexions ?). Sans rentrer dans les questions de fonds, mieux analysées ailleurs , car je n'ai pas encore eu le temps de le lire in-extenso.Deux points m'ont frappé :
- le rapport est très lisible, écrit dans un langage dénué de jargon excessif (pour information, cf., les efforts entrepris en France pour la simplification du langage administratif ) ;
- la mise en pages est esthétique et le choix de la police de caractère Monotype Bembo est judicieux, ça change du sempiternel Times ou Helvetica.

Hawai'i Political Blog & Language Resources
- I found a Maui based weblog on Hawaiian Sovereignty Issues that appears to be against the Akaka Bill now before the U.S. Congress that would grant native tribal rights to indigenous Hawaiian as well as some sort of "domestic sovereignty" and arguing on the contrary for full Hawaiian independence. The blog seems very well written and has plenty of links. It is powered by iblog. For a contrary position check out OHA: The Office of Hawaiian Affaires homepage.
The Honolulu Advertiser published an article on June 28 on Hawaiian texts available on the Internet at the Hawaiian Electronic Library.
There is also some information on the site on the proper display of Hawaiian diacritical marks the 'Okina and Kahakô (or macron) the strait line above the vowel. They display perfectly with Unicode enabled browsers on Windows XP and MacOS10.2x and above:
Carnet web sur l'indépendance hawaïenne et ressources linguistiques
- Je viens de découvrir un carnet web sur le mouvement souverainiste hawaïen (fonctionnant sous le logiciel iblog) qui semble prendre parti contre le projet de loi Akaka actuellement devant le Congrès des États-Unis. Celui-ci prévoit d'octroyer le statut de "nation indienne" et d'autonomie interne aux indigènes hawaïens sans tenir compte de pourcentages raciaux et une forme de souveraineté intérieure, mais il est très contesté, toutefois soutenu par OHA l'organisme de l'État d'Hawaï défendant les droits des Hawaïens, OHA.Un article paru dans l'Honolulu Advertiser du 28 juin dernier mentionne les ressources disponibles sur l'Internet en langue hawaïenne, notamment sur le site Ulukau.
Les accents, la virgule ' renversée 'okina et le trait horizontal kahakô (remplacé par l'accent circonflexe ici) sur les voyelles o i a e u qui en rallongent la prononciation, sont directement lisibles grâce à Unicode sur les navigateurs récents utilisant les systèmes d'exploitation Windows XP et OS 10.2 et supérieure.

- This K-12 site from Enchanted Lake Elementary (O'ahu) has interesting info about Hawai'i and even won a Platinum Award at the 2003 Cyberfair Competition, in the Category 2: Community Groups and Populations, for their site "Hawaii, Mixing a Pot of Colors":
"Hawaii's population is unlike any other state. More than twenty-one percent of the people living in Hawaii are multiracial, compared to the 2.4 percent of the United States as a whole. Hawaii is one of three states that has no racial majority".
Another site was created to deal with the current traffic gridlock and possible solutions, in particular rail.
And this site has fascinating information on sharks in Hawaii.

- Les élèves d'une école primaire sur l'île d'Oahu ont conçu un site Web très intéressant sur les îles Hawaï et sa société multiraciale « Hawaï est l'un des trois États [des USA] où aucune race n'est majoritaire ».Par ailleurs, malgré la pénurie de sites en langue française sur les l'archipels, voici quelques liens intéressants :

- The U.S. Department of Labor has posted an overview of the professions of translator and interpreter that is quite exhaustive and informative. A brochure is available on the homepage of the ATA's (American Translators Association Website) "Getting it Right - Advice for Buyers". An Italian > English translator has some useful recommendations too.

- Le Ministère du travail fédéral des États-Unis a mis en ligne un document (en anglais) très fouillé sur les métiers de la traduction et de l'interprétation. Il y des liens utiles sur le site de la SFT (Société française des traducteurs) et une brochure au format Adobe Reader .pdf en français, « Traduction, faire les bons choix », lien sur la page d'accueil. En outre, voir les recommandations d'une traductrice anglais > italien. Le site canadien francophone l'Arc-en-plume propose des liens utiles.
