Chinese Year of the Green Monkey

- The Chinese Year of the Monkey began January 22, 2004 and will end February 8, 2005.

Lord Buddha wanted all the animals to appear before him. But most of the birds and beasts were too busy with their various chores, so only 12 came forth: The Rat, then the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys

- I recently discovered a blog that is publishing the diary of Samuel Pepys, written between 1660 and 1669. The posts are now at mid-January 1661. He is considered one of the best diarists in English literature. Excellent details on the author's life and background information are available on the site. The site uses the Movable Type CMS. Could Pepys have imagined one day he'd be read on the Word Wide Web?

But I have a major problem with the project. Unfortunately, most likely for copyright reasons, the site's creator used a freely available e-text at the Gutenberg Project, the Henry B. Wheatley edition, which is incomplete at best, highly censored at most.

The Diary was written in a Cipher, or speed-writing system, very popular at the time, up to 80 words per minute with the advantage of discretion, in view of the occasionally unabashed material. The diary had to be transcribed, and various editions were published during the 19th century, but all the editors sanitized the text, which is unfortunate because it looses some of its color, and even becomes rather incomprehensible at times. The only complete and uncensored edition is that of Robert Latham and William Matthews, in XII volumes, published by the University of California Press, 1971.

Uncensored passage from the entry for December 27, 1660 quoted from the Latham & Matthews edition:

About the middle of the night I was very ill, I think with eating and drinking too much; and so I was forced to call the mayde (who pleased my wife and I in her running up and down so innocently in her smock) and vomited in the bason; and so to sleep, and in the morning was pretty well -- only got cold and so have pain in pissing, as I used to have.
Volume I • 1660, p. 323

The online diary's rendition of the passage is blander:

About the middle of the night I was very ill -- I think with eating and drinking too much -- and so I was forced to call the maid who pleased my wife and I in her running up and down so innocently in her smock, and vomited in the bason, and so to sleep, and in the morning was pretty well, only got cold, and so had pain . . . . as I used to have.
